Last week we featured wineries, that out of the hundreds of thousands worldwide, were selected to be among the top 50.

Taking first place overall was Catena, followed by Penfolds, Torres and 19 Crimes.

Today, I will share information on another five that were also on this prestigious list from the publication called Drinks International.

In 2013, The Wine Spectator selected a wine from the Cune winery in Rioja, Spain, to take their top spot for their list of the top 100 wines in the world.

This winery was founded by two brothers in 1879 and it is still owned by the same family that makes a beautiful range.

Cune Reserva 2015 is a blend of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo grapes that we sell for $30.90.

It rates 92/100 from the Wine Enthusiast that describes it in this way: 揇ry, leathery berry and currant aromas include a note of oak. On the palate, this Reserva from a ripe vintage feels flush, firmly tannic and well built. Black-plum and dark-cherry flavours finish full and with just a hint of oak character. Drink through 2030?

Staying in Rioja, Spain, the Marqu閟 de Riscal winery also made the list. Their Reserva wines are basically made of grapes from Tempranillo vines planted before the 1970s and grown in the best clay-limestone soils of the Rioja Alavesa.

This variety withstands oak and bottle ageing well thanks to its good balance of acidity and fine tannin.

The Graciano variety, whose presence in the blend does not exceed 10 per cent, provide crispness and a lively colour.

Riscal Reservas spend around two years in American Oak barrels, producing a wine which corresponds to the classic Rioja style: fresh, fine, elegant and very suitable for laying down for many years.

Before release for sale it spends a minimum of one year rounding off in the bottle; time enough to show how much complexity Tempranillo is able to achieve.

Marqu閟 de Riscal Reserva 2015 lists for $28.90. Decanter magazine writes: 揊ragrant herbaceous characters, ripe fruits, a lifted, juicy freshness and an energetic finish.?/p>

Michel Chapoutier, a producer from the Rh鬾e Valley in France, likes to say that wine comes from the sky and the earth and the love that we have for it. I believe that I am correct in saying that he is the largest biodynamic and organic winemaker in Europe.

The M. Chapoutier Cotes Du Rh鬾e 態elleruche?2018 rates 90/100 from the Wine Enthusiast that says, 搃n this wine, hints of toasted caramel and liquorice lend spice to intensely ripe blackberry and cassis. Voluptuous and creamy on the palate, it抯 balanced by fresh acidity and a peppery fringe of tannins on the finish. Best now ?2023? $20.35

Also from the C魌es du Rh鬾e, though produced in a specific village, is the M. Chapoutier Rasteau 2017. A very deep crimson red, with a fine and powerful nose of ripe fruit aromas, including currant, blackcurrant and raspberry.

With a generous mouth feel, this wine presents a good structure and a great potential. $24.90.

The Cono Sur winery from Chile also made the list and here are a couple of their wines to consider. As May 1 was World Sauvignon Blanc Day why not try the Cono Sur Bicicleta 2017 Sauvignon Blanc, so named as vineyard workers travel around the estate by bicycle, tending the vines using natural methods to produce the best quality grapes.

Bicicleta wine is a tribute to them and symbolises their sustainable philosophy and commitment to the environment.

This is a crisp and intense Sauvignon Blanc with refreshing citrus aromas, white peaches, lychee and a palate of green apples balanced by a crisp, dry finish. $15.85.

For the same price of $15.85 you can have their soft and serious, the Cono Sur Bicicleta Merlot 2018, with plum-red colouring that is dark and intense.

In the nose, there are concentrated notes of black fruit and soft hints of sweet toasted oak.

The palate surprises with its excellent structure, balanced acidity, fruity intensity and pleasantly ripe tannins. Made to be enjoyed while young.

We do have a few more that made this top fifty list, but let me end with the Symington family of Portugal that made the list for the first time, and in a very respectable seventh place.

We are out of their two very highly rated table wines called P+S Post Scriptum and P+S Chryseia, but we do have a very full range of their Graham抯 Ports from Tawny, Ruby, Vintage and late Bottled Vintage.

I should mention that we are starting to open up to a limited extent. Our store on Harbour Road in Paget will be taking orders on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays from noon until 5pm, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 10am until 5pm.
